Local Portal has gone through some major updates. If you don’t know what Local Portal is, let me explain. Local Portal is a mobile site builder for those with a geo .mobi domain, for example: renonevada.mobi. Local Portal is a paid service ( $89.99 a year, for unlimited sites ), that creates an site for you instantly. This site includes a Forum, Business Listings, Classifieds, Local Events, and more.

You can see more at http://www.localportal.mobi

Here are the Local Portal updates, along with an important message for those with an un-paid account.

New Style
Local Portal now lets you select color schemes, rather than mess with the CSS. You can see the new styles at http://www.localportal.mobi/styles.php

To see them in action go to:
www.daytona.mobi
www.umass.mobi
www.det.mobi

Forum
There is now a very unique forum feature available to all Local Portal sites. This forum is for registered members only, and is available on all purchased accounts. You have control in the admin to add/edit categories, and will soon be able to monitor your whole forum.

You can see an example of the forum at: http://umass.mobi/thumbforum.php

Classifieds
The classifieds are now pulled in via Craigslist. This is still in BETA, and there will be a better way to browse and search classifieds soon.

No More Ads
There are no more admob, google, or my own personal ads on Local Portal. This is to try to strum up local advertising. If someone contacts us about advertising on a site you have listed with us, you will get 80% of the advertisement sale. Our ad serving software will then be integrated of the site(s) of the clients choice.

We will consult with you before any transactions are made. You have the final say in the end.

Much More to Come
There is much more to come in the near future.. Custom Logo Creation, Browse/Search broadened classifieds, business ratings, and more.

You can see a current list of sites using Local Portal at www.localportal.mobi/created-sites.php

If you had a Local Portal when it was free, your account will soon be deleted (30 days). I’m willing to export your site, and set it up on your server for $100.00 (this includes ALL domains, however you will not receive future upgrades and updates.)

Otherwise, you can register your account for $89.99 a year for unlimited sites, updates, and upgrades.

Attention Restaurants / Bars / and Local Attractions.

Saturday.mobi has been in development for the past year. It’s finally in a beta phase, and if you own a business in the USA, here is your chance to get free mobile media advertising.

If the first question that comes to mind is “What the heck is a dot mobi?” then let me explain it this way…dot com (.com) is for your PC while dot mobi (.mobi) is for your mobile phone. Unlike “Apps”, .mobi sites work on any mobile phone with an Internet browser. That said, back to our message from last week…

We, Proton Marketing Group, created Saturday.mobi (www.saturday.mobi) with the mission of making best in class mobile marketing functionality free to local ‘destination’ businesses including, restaurants, bars & clubs and local attractions. Through a simple activation process, business owners get 24/7 access to update 2 lines of ad text as well as a mobile coupon.

What do we need from you? The initial push is heavy B2B to get the local businesses to activate their listings. If you own a ‘destination’ business, activate your listing and take advantage of the free advertising. If you know someone who owns a business, spread the word.

Question or comments to ted [at] saturday [dot] mobi. Thank you very much.

We need your help! Go to www.Saturday.mobi on your phone or pc. Find your business, activate your account. If you’re not there, tell us! If we need to make a correction, tell us! We made it free. Now we need you to use it.

I get many people asking how to put an image of a Google Map on their mobile website. This is a very easy task to do, and I will explain how.

First and foremost, you need to get an application key for your site. You can do so at Google’s website ( http://code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html ).

After you have your application key, it’s as easy as adding an image to your website:

<img src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=10%20Main%20St%20Greenfield,MA&zoom=16&size=200x200&sensor=false&markers=blue|10%20Main%20St%20Greenfield,MA&maptype=roadmap&mobile=true&key=YOUR_KEY_HERE" width="200" height="200" alt="Google Map" />

Simply replace 10%20Main%20St%20Greenfield,MA with the address you wish to use. Remember to use %20 as a space, or you can URL Encode your address.

Easy, and straight forward!

Now if you want to allow the user to zoom in and out, we can use some simple PHP coding to achieve this. See below.

<?php
$gzoom = $_GET['zoom'];
if(empty($gzoom)) {
$zoom = 14;
}
else {
$zoom = $gzoom;
}
?>

<img src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=10%20Main%20St%20Greenfield,MA&zoom=<? echo $zoom; ?>&size=200x200&sensor=false&markers=blue|10%20Main%20St%20Greenfield,MA&maptype=roadmap&mobile=true&key=YOUR_KEY_HERE" width="200" height="200" alt="Google Map" />

<?php
$in = $zoom+2;
$out = $zoom-2;
?>
<br />
<a href="?zoom=<? echo $in; ?>">Zoom In</a> | <a href="?zoom=<? echo $out; ?>">Zoom Out</a>

The $gzoom variable get’s the current zoom value, and adds it to Google’s Map Image. Then we add 2 to zoom in, and subtract 2 to zoom out, and display the links. Easy? Yep!

I just read about ExchangeRates.mobi being released by the Mobility.mobi owner, Andres Kello. Andres has developed many useful sites just like this, including the FreeDictionary, and the FreeTranslation.

Here is his post from Mobility:

Hi Folks,

I just finished ExchangeRates.mobi, a domain I bought from a member here a week ago.

This is another very useful and highly versatile site. It can convert between 173 currencies, including precious metals and obsolete currencies (e.g. old European currencies, pre-Euro).

“Exchange Rates” has 1 million exact searches per month on Google, so it’s in demand, particularly from travelers, which is what drove me to build it, especially since I could not find a fast, free, and user-friendly exchange rate and currency converter site for mobiles (if you can’t find it, build it!).

Like most of the mobile sites I develop, it has some neat URL tricks which make mobile access a lot faster since the forms can be skipped altogether:

Quick View: To quickly view the most common exchange rates for a particular currency, you can simply use its 3-letter code directly in the URL preceded by a slash like this:

http://ExchangeRates.mobi/USD

Quick FX Rate: To quickly view an exchange rate for a pair of currencies, you can simply pair their 3-letter codes up in the URL with a dash like this:

http://ExchangeRates.mobi/USD-EUR

Quick Convert: To quickly convert an amount between currencies, you can skip the form at the bottom and go straight to the converted amount via the URL by following the currency pairs with a slash and an amount like this:

http://ExchangeRates.mobi/USD-EUR/143.78

Customize: To customize ExchangeRates.mobi and view your selected exchange rates, you can pair them all up in the URL separated by slashes like this:

http://ExchangeRates.mobi/USD-EUR/EUR-GBP/BRL-CNY

You can then BOOKMARK that page for quick access to your custom list. No login or cookies required.

The drop-down menus are also pre-sorted with quick access to the 14 most traded currencies plus the 4 BRIC currencies.

I’ve designed the site without tables for maximum compatibility across all mobiles and it scores a 5/5 as usual.

Please browse through it (particularly on non-iPhone’s) and let me know what you think.

For Questions, Comments or Concerns you can post on his thread at Mobility.mobi

Lately I’ve been stumbling across alot of Adult .mobi’s being developed around users uploading photos/videos of themselves to spark up conversation with other members. I don’t consider these to be full “porn” sites, as it’s all user generated, and that’s one of the main tools to drive in more members. The more content the users post, the more interested other members are. Mobile Porn sites offer memberships to download videos/photos, but no direct contact with the people being featured in the content. Please, if you are offended by adult content, please do not read any further.

So, I partnered up with a long time friend to create my first adult social network. The hardest part was coming up with a name that could be remembered easily. We settled on one of his domains, Titts.mobi. Why Titts? Why not, it’s short, and easy to remember. Plus it’s a great keyword to base an adult site around. Mainly we are going for traffic and interactivity between members to ensure the site doesn’t get stale. However, we require that everyone be 18 to view the site, so we enforce a signup link right on the homepage before the content can be viewed.

So we have our name, now we need the content. As a core, I used the Social Networking Script from Scripter.mobi, and heavily modified it to suite the member galleries. I also added multiple chat rooms, live status updates, a smooth icon set, sending gifts through a private messaging system, and a few other bells and whistles.

Okay, the content is here! Now we need members. But, we need members that are willing to upload photos of themselves for others to rate and comment. So, we ran $10 on admob, and got around a 150 member turnaround, which wasn’t bad. Also had about 5% of those people upload photos to be rated.

We’re on the right path! It was very fun to watch all of the new members signup during the admob campaign. Two days later we are up to 800+ members, with around 70 photos, and a huge chat archive, with the member list growing every day.

Now, had this been just a regular social network, we may not have been so successful with it. We add new features every day, and get our members interested. We always welcome their feedback.

The purpose of this post was to give a little bit of insight of my first baby steps into the Adult Mobile world. So far I’m very happy with the results. You can see the site at www.titts.mobi , and we are even distributing the script as an Adult Social Network Script, which you can purchase by seeing www.titts.mobi/about.php

This is a cool little trick I used on my new site, Surl Mobile Bookmarks. Basically whenever someone adds a new bookmark, I want it to be tweeted. I searched around the web, and found an easy code snippet, that works like a charm.

For my site, when someone adds a bookmark, it posts their site title, description, and keywords into my database, and then adds it to the home page. While that code is happening, I simply use this Twitter PHP code to send the tweet.

First, you need this Twitter class, copy this code into your page:

class Twitter
{
   function Twitter() {
      die('Cannot instantiate this class(Twitter) in: '.__FILE__);
   }

   /**
    * Attempts to contact twitter and post a message
    *
    * @param string $uname         = Twitter User Name
    * @param string $pWord         = Twitter Password
    * @param string $message = The message to post through the communication system
    * @param string $apiUrl = Twitter API Url. (Optional - defaulted to standard XML API)
    * @return boolean
    **/
   function sendTwitter($message='',$apiUrl='http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml')
   {
      $curl_handle = curl_init();
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_URL, "$apiUrl");
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, 2);
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1);
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_POST, 1);
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, "status=$message");
      curl_setopt($curl_handle, CURLOPT_USERPWD, "USERNAME:PASSWORD");
      //Attempt to send
      $buffer = curl_exec($curl_handle);
      curl_close($curl_handle);
      if(strpos($buffer,'<error>') !== false)
      {
         return false;
      }
      else
      {
         return true;
      }
   }
}

Where it says “USERNAME:PASSWORD” , put in your Twitter Username, and Twitter Password.

Then you simply put in this code after all of your PHP functions have happened.

$message = "http://surl.mobi New site posted at Surl.mobi";
$result = Twitter::sendTwitter($message);
   if($result)
   {
      echo "We've posted a tweet about your site entry!";
   }

That’s all there is to it! Now your web application can post directly to twitter, which can also help with traffic.
